Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for artistic expression and creative thinking. Her aunt was an overnight nurse so that she could have the chance to learn about art literature or theater. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay discovered through experience that art is a great tool for political activism. In the same way, her mother was conscious of her social status and influenced the importance of speaking up through the arts. DuVernay was a child living with family members in Compton, spent each summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Selma, and later directed a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she earned qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. She began her career as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to sit at the house of a member of the jury, and then go through their garbage. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was handed, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay was hired straight from college to be an assistant publicist in a small studio. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency also launched several marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
