Ryan Whitney

  Ryan Whitney (born February 19, 1983) is an American former professional ice hockey defenseman. Whitney was a player on the Thayer Academy high school hockey team as well as the USA National Development Program high school hockey team, joined the college ranks at Boston University in 2001. After completing his first year of college Whitney was picked by the Pittsburgh Penguins fifth overall in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. Following parts of three seasons with the Penguins' minor league affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Whitney played his NHL rookie season in 2005-06. Whitney was a Pittsburgh resident for three and a half seasons, helping the team reach the Stanley Cup Finals in 2008. He was transferred to the Edmonton Oilers in 2010 after an appearance with the Anaheim Ducks.Whitney has competed internationally for the United States. Whitney retired from professional hockey on the 20th of September, 2015. He was awarded a silver medal by the United States at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. He currently works as an analyst for NHL Network as well as co-hosting with former NHL enforcer Paul Bissonnette on the Barstool Sports hockey podcast, "Spittin' Chiclets". New Amsterdam Vodka created a drink that is named in his honor called "Pink Whitney". In September of 2019, the pink lemonade-flavored vodka was available in US stores as well as Canadian stores the next November.
